Sarah & Peter - 2

Peter felt a ray of sunshine on his face. He opened his eyes. He was in his bed and besides him lay awake was Sarah. The morning ray of light was just brushing her old wrinkled cheek. He slowly turned to her side, feeling the usual stiffness in his back. She was looking at a distance, thinking of something. He took her arm in his hands and said, 'Good Morning dear'. She slowly turned her head towards him, smiled, took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Peter felt his grip easing. He left her hand and caressed her face. She has left him. He called her name softly, 'Sarah, dear?'. She did not answer.

40 years ago, Sarah left her family and moved into city to look for a job. Her family was quiet poor and Sarah has been working evry day of her adult life. It was time for her to move to the big city and try to change her fate. But, city was cruel to Sarah. For weeks, Sarah did not find better job than what she was doing at home. She was living in the worst possible places of the city. One day when she was returning from another failed job interview, she found herself engrossed in self pity of how bad things were for her. On that particular day, she chose to stand near the door of the subway. As the doors opened, in a flash, Peter in his black hoodie snatched her bag and ran out of the door. Sarah was stunned for a second As she came to her senses, she ran behind him, screaming, 'hey stop, hey you, somebody stop him.' But the busy city didn't even bother to turnaround and look.

Peter was raised by a homeless couple. Nobody knew his real parents. As a kid, he never went to School, always worked to bring food for his homeless parents. He had real hard all his adulthood, but never had a surplus meal to his name. He was always working for three people. One such week, he was laid of work to cut cost at the factory. Though the work didn't pay much, it helped him buy food. For a couple of days he searched for a job but everywhere he went he heard some word he didn't know, recession. After couple of Hungry nights, he became desparate and snatched Sarah's bag, his first crime. As Sarah was chasing him, he looked back at her. She was in tears and screaming her lungs out. He tripped and fell. Sarah caught up and jumped on him and started beating him with her bag. He just laid down looking at her teary eyes, feeling her pain.

It has been 40 years now and she left him. It was his turn to chase her in tears and screams. But he was too old to scream. He pulled her head in his arms and tears started pouring down his eyes. 'hey stop, hey you, somebody stop her.', he said softly.
